The Other New Year for Small Business Owners
There is something about September that always feels like a fresh start.
Perhaps it is the new school shoes lined up by the door. The return of alarm clocks and packed lunches. The family calendar filling up again. Or simply the feeling that, after the unpredictability of the summer holidays, some sort of routine is finally returning.
For parents who run their own businesses, September can feel even more like the beginning of a new year than January does.
The children go back to school, working hours become a little more predictable and for the first time in weeks, you might actually be able to finish a thought without hearing, "Mum?" or "Dad?" halfway through it!
But with that sense of relief can come something else too.
Pressure.
Suddenly Christmas doesn't seem very far away.
You look at the plans you made at the beginning of the year and realise there are only a few months left to achieve them. There are projects you wanted to finish, clients you meant to follow up with, systems you planned to sort out and goals that somehow got pushed further and further down the list.
September can quickly become a race to make up for lost time.
We understand it because we see it all the time.
Running a small business alongside a young family means your working year doesn't always look like everybody else's. School holidays change your routine. Sick days happen. Sports days, assemblies and appointments land in the middle of the working week.
And you want to be there for those moments.
That is one of the reasons many of us choose to run our own businesses in the first place. We want flexibility. We want to build something of our own without missing everything happening at home.
But flexibility doesn't mean there is suddenly more time in the day.
That is why September is a brilliant opportunity to reset.
Take a look at what you want to achieve before Christmas and ask yourself what genuinely needs your attention.
Then look at everything else.
What are you still doing simply because you have always done it? What admin is taking hours every week? What tasks keep getting moved from one day to the next? What would happen if somebody else took care of them?
Getting support isn't about stepping away from your business.
It is about making sure your time is spent where it has the greatest impact.
Imagine reaching December without that frantic feeling of trying to finish everything at once. Imagine knowing the admin is under control, the important jobs have been followed up and you have been able to focus on moving your business forward.
September gives us a fresh start.
You don't need a brand new planner, an impossible list of goals or a promise to suddenly become more productive.
Sometimes, you simply need the right support around you.
If September has brought you a long list of things you want to achieve before Christmas, don't spend the next few months trying to do it all alone. Talk to Personal Ascensions about the tasks we can take off your hands and let's make this final part of the year productive, organised and manageable.
